Thinking about selling your business blog? It seems to be a topic that is discussed more and more these days. I’ve written about selling a blog and buying a blog here in the not too recent past. Which keeps generating questions via phone and email.

But are you really sure you want to sell your blog? Have you considered some of the likely repercussions?

For example, have you thought about what you’re going to do after you sell it? Many website buyers are going to want you to sign a non competition clause as part of the sales contract. Likely for 2 years or even more in some cases. Likely you’ll be selling the company with the business blog, but not always. If you intend to keep doing business in the same field, you may lose more than you gain from the sale.

You may also be asked to continue blogging for a contracted period of time. Because it’s very likely that the reason your blog is a success is YOU. Your new buyer is probably hip to this and may want to keep the magic going for a while until they figure out a new business plan. Are you prepared to continue blogging for them as an employee? Are you ready to start taking direction from your blog employer? Are you ready to lose some of the freedom that you had while building it?

Some real questions need to be asked and only you can answer them. But ultimately, you really need to look past the dollar signs and make sure that what you are gaining outweighs what you are giving up. It may sound like a real plan to sell your blog and move on with some cash in hand. Just know what is in store for you and plan your future accordingly.

Blogs are in fact selling like hotcakes these days. Some of them for millions of dollars. So this may be the time to consider posting the old “for sale” sign. Just make sure you sell your blog with open eyes and a real plan as to what you are going to do afterward.
