Google: Wayback Search Machine?
Bouncing about in the blogosphere today I came across a post on one of the ZDNet blogs that I found interesting.
“Google may be about to launch a search tool that uses the same algorithms used way back in 2001. Why would they do this? I think it’s probably the best way for them to show how far search technology has come in 7 years.”
Garett Rogers, the Googling Google blogger I’m quoting here goes on to explain the reasoning for his speculation. That it’s due to a new entry in Google’s robots.txt file including a new folder named “search2001″.
Whether Mr. Rogers is right or not is anybody’s guess at this point. The new folder as of this writing does not resolve for Google. But wouldn’t it be cool if he is right? Personally I’d really like to take a look at the differences between the algorithms, then and now.
Because I remember what search engine optimization was like in 2001. And having the results side by side to compare would be a super tool in dialing in the differences today.
At this point it is nothing but speculation. So let’s all stay tuned and see what Google actually brings us.
It might be nothing, right?
