Blogging for Attorneys

Lately I’ve been scoping out some other forms of marketing. Mostly checking out the competition in the PPC game via Spyfu. One of the cool things about SpyFu is that you can actually see what the top bids for certain keywords are within Google Adwords.

Which is pretty amazing. If you take a look at the top keyword list, you’ll be totally amazed at how high some of the bids are. Per click! Here’s the link.

What was interesting to me is how high some of the attorney related keywords and key phrases are. Most of the search terms revolve around specific cities like Boston, Phoenix, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Austin. These lawyers are paying upwards of $50 per click, or more in some cases. That’s per click, not per client my friends.

Lets dissect this a little further, shall we?

According to the Google Keyword Tool, if you combine the related terms “phoenix DUI lawyers”, “phoenix dui attorney” and “phoenix DUI lawyer” (singular), you get around 3500 searches per month. From experience I’ve found that the keyword tool is often a bit off and the actual search volume can be more or less. You may even get different results when you use the tool today for the same terms. But let’s use these numbers just for the sake of argument.

Let’s say that having a quality Adwords ad for these DWI terms is bringing in 2% of those searches via Pay Per Click to the attorney bidding on those keywords. That firm is nabbing about 70 clicks per month. At a cost of $3500 smackers. Bringing the yearly PPC cost for three little terms in Google search at the grand total of $42,000.

Cheap if you ask most attorneys, considering what most of them pay just for yellow page ads every month. (a full page ad on the back of a major metropolitan phone book cover can run you 50 grand a month or more….)

I’m going to get to my point though. Because I do have one. :)

Why are they spending that much for a term that would be fairly easy to garner via blogging??

Consider this my legal friends. For about 1/4 of that 40 large you could likely nab the same terms with a DUI blog. I searched some of the terms and I have to say, they aren’t really that competitive. Not that many results, and from a brief search, the competition is fairly loose. No one is blogging for these terms with any real effort.

A Phoenix DUI blog is ripe for the pickens’. I suspect the same holds true for Boston, L.A., Austin, and Chicago.

We’re not only talking about a couple of keywords or phrases either. No, no, no. We’re talking about grabbing a whole truckload of terms via a lawyer blog targeting your area.

All with NATURAL rankings. Organic listings that don’t bing your credit card every time someone clicks your link. Think about how much those organic listings for your law firm might be worth overall. All for the cost of building a blog.

It’s simple math my friends. If you can gain those listings organically you save money. You also gain a higher click through ratio from organic listings because those people searching for your services trust them more than paid listings.

Don’t get me wrong, I do use PPC and I think it’s a valuable and necessary part of business promotion. But combine PPC advertising with organic listings and now you’re talking. Now your firm sits at a level you may have never even considered before.

We’re talking powerhouse baby.
