With the blogging boom has come literally thousands of would-be blog coaches. Each with their own opinions and different methods for developing successful corporate blogs. Which is fine, many of them offer sound advice that if followed, could help your blog perform better. But some of them seem to focus on areas that might not be particularly helpful to your blog or your company goals.

One of the main misdirections in my opinion is that some of these coaches advise corporate bloggers to focus their efforts primarily with other bloggers in the blogosphere. That they should attend every blog expo, rub elbows with certain pro-bloggers, and become one of them. One big happy blogging family. Patting each other on the back because of how important they are within the blogosphere.

But ask yourself, how important is it to your company to be within the inner circle of elite bloggers?

If bloggers are your primary market then yes, it would be important to plant yourself within this group. However, sometimes we lose sight of our goal. Working harder to be a big shot in the industry rather than putting egos aside and working to make our blogs do what they were initially supposed to do. That is, further our company and its presence online. Or whatever your initial goals were when you started blogging.

If your goal was in fact to be a big shot blogger, then by all means, become a big shot blogger. But if that wasn’t your goal, stay focused. Remember what that goal was and don’t get trapped into a costly corporate blogging mistake.

Is it possible to achieve both? To be well-respected among the blogging Who’s Who? Of course it is. But if you blog naturally each and every day and stay focused on the original goals you set for your blog you’ll likely get there anyway.

Don’t make the mistake of letting your ego or that of your blogging coach get in the way of your corporate blogging success.
