Quoting your post sources

When writing your company blog, sometimes it’s necessary to use information that you didn’t pull out of your head. Info that comes from outside sources. Primarily, other websites.

But it’s not o.k. to use other people’s material if you don’t give them credit for it. Be sure and put any content you have cut and pasted from another site into quotes, indented, or italicized, and then give a link back to the page where you found the content. It is one way to save yourself from awful embarrassment and plagiarism allegations up the road.

Also, when quoting another source, don’t just cut and paste their material alone. Remember, the whole idea behind your company blog is to build content for your website. Original content.

So a good formula for making that post more original to your site is this. Preface the quote with the reason you are going to quote them. Then put in the quote, and then go over why the quote is important.

Basically, the same rule always applies when it comes to writing.

  • Tell them what you are going to tell them.
  • Tell them.
  • Tell them what you told them.
  • If you follow this writing recipe your blog posts will always be more informative.
