Business is good, why blog?
No thanks, I already have a dollar…
That’s what it sounds like to me. I hear it all the time.
You’re sitting at number one for the term or terms you wanted, your blog has fought the battle and won like Rocky Balboa, and you’re sitting smugly in your office thinking the battle is over.
But is it really?
One big misconception about SEO, search placement and content for a website is that once you get to the top you get to be king. Forever.
But understand. Your competitors are also blogging, each and every day. The fact that you are on top is only a challenge to them. Remember when we were kids and used to play ‘king of the hill’? We’re still playing it today. Only now it’s a little more serious when you get knocked off.
Once you arrive at your desired goal, it’s not time to hang up your efforts. Far from it my friends. Getting to the top and staying on top are two very different, very real things.
We have a client that wanted a specific term. It was their goal when they started their business blog. The competition was stiff. It included some heavy hitters that are in the top 100 on the internet. With millions and millions of results.
In less than a year, they had the term they wanted, and needless to say, they were pleased.
So pleased that they stopped doing what got them there. Convinced that they were ‘untouchable’ because of all the effort they had put in getting that prime listing.
Yup, you guessed it. They ain’t numero uno any more.
In fact, they aren’t even on the first result page anymore. What happened is that their competitors in this case saw the opening. They saw that they had quit doing all the things that took them to the top. The competitors seized the opportunity, using every bit of energy they could muster to generate content and add value to their sites to overtake them.
Kind of like a lion scoping out a gazelle. Prime pickins’….
Remember, just because you are at the top doesn’t mean you’ll stay there effortlessly. Once you get there you need to work just as hard, if not harder, to stay there.
Business always requires investment. Be it time or money. Know that that investment is always going to be a requirement, never a passing expense that will fade away once you have ‘arrived’….
