Strategy

I’m not a baseball fan, nor do I claim to be someone that knows much about the game. When I lived in Seattle I used to go see the Mariners play from time to time, but that’s about the extent of what I know.

But today I was thinking about blog posts and baseball, believe it or not.

I was thinking about strategy, as it pertains to a business blog and how it could be compared to the game.

In baseball you have your sluggers. Guys that consistently hit homers and score points for the team. But occasionally the coach asks these players to bunt, or to sacrifice. Something smaller than what they normally do. Though still really effective for the overall game, it’s not the same slug for the stands.

Blogging for business is similar in this way. You don’t have to hit a home run with each and every blog post. Some bloggers spend far too much time working on honing the perfect blog post each time they add something to their blog.

I have one client that spends about a week on each post before he actually puts it on his site. Though each post is stellar, and does quite well for him, I can’t help but think that his site might do a little better with more frequent updates and a more diverse cross section of new content.

That he might do better overall if he posted more often. Honing the posts a little less and getting more content into the site overall.

Yes, it’s good to do keyword research and it’s good to have proper grammatical structure. But it’s better to have more content. It’s better to have more frequent additions to your site. It’s better for the search engines, and your users, to see your site grow consistently.

Sometimes, it’s better to bunt. Sometimes it can help you win the game.
